How to Research Products Before Listing Them on eBay

A practical process for checking demand, competition, and profitability before you commit money or time to a product.

Good product research reduces guesswork. Before listing an item on eBay, work through a simple, repeatable process.

Start with demand

Look at sold listings for the product, not just active ones. Sold listings show what buyers have actually paid for, and how often. A product with many active listings but few sales may be harder to sell than it looks.

Assess the competition

Note how many sellers offer the same or similar items, how they present them, and what they charge. Strong competition is not always a reason to avoid a product, but you need a clear reason why a buyer would choose your listing.

Check the condition and variants

Prices can vary widely between new and used items, or between sizes, colors, and models. Make sure you compare like with like.

Calculate realistic profit

Estimate your total cost: purchase price, selling fees, payment fees, packaging, and postage. Compare that with the realistic selling price from your research, not the highest price you saw.

Consider sourcing and reliability

Can you obtain the product consistently, from a legitimate supplier, with proper invoices? Reliable sourcing matters as much as the selling price.

Review policies and restrictions

Some categories and products have extra requirements or restrictions. Check eBay's policies before you buy stock.

Record your findings

Keep a simple spreadsheet of each product you research, with demand, competition, cost, and estimated margin. Over time this becomes a useful decision tool.
